NEFLSC Scenic Drive 2011 - April 16th

NEFLSC Scenic Drive 2011 - April 16th

Postby GB24Hours » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:11 pm

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16th!

Get the Swedes all tuned up, cleaned up, and waxed up!

Load your CD case (or Mp3 player) with your favorite road tunes!

Invite your favorite traveling companion!

Come on out for a day of beautiful Spring driving with your NEFLSC friends.... enjoy the sun, the company, the sun, the food, and the scenery.

For a small taste of the 2010 Scenic Drive, check here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=355

Exact details for the 2011 Scenic Drive will be posted soon (watch this space!), but the plan is for a sort-of Round-Robin, multi check point trip (one of which will be lunch), where participants can join up or drop-off at their leisure.

Before I post all the details, I need to drive the route to get exact mileage and ETA's, so keep watch on this space for more info!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DETAILS: (Still finalising... subject to change!)

Start: 11:00AM, Saturday April 16th (Meet at 10:30)
Flying J Truck Stop/Denny's Restaurant, SR 206 & I-95 near St. Augustine
Meet in the northwest corner of the Denny's lot.

Finish: 2:00PM (approximate) Lunch at Lighthouse Landing Restaurant, Ponce Inlet

In-between we will take a look at a bit of the original Dixie Highway, with bricks laid in 1915; Explore a bit of the Scenic Ormond Loop; Take a rest at the Tomb of James Ormond; and have lunch overlooking the historic "Mosquito" Inlet in the shadow of one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world.

Itinerary:

Meet at 10:30am.

Depart at 11:00am.

Explore about 1 mile of the original, 96 year old, brick Dixie Highway at approximately 11:30am. Photo opportunity.

Enter the Scenic Ormond Loop at 12:15pm.

Stop at James Ormond Park at 12:30pm. Photo opportunity. Playground for kids. Restrooms. The tomb of James Ormond. (Really!)http://www.ormondbeach.org/facilities.aspx?pagenum=6&RID=32&Page=detail

Depart James Ormond Park at 1:00pm.

Cruise along the Halifax River, then through "downtown" Daytona Beach. Cross to the beach side near Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The final 15 minutes are not the most "scenic". Travel residential side streets until reaching Lighthouse Point Park.

Lunch at Lighthouse Landing, approximately 2:00pm. (Very, very casual.) http://www.discoverdaytona.com/beachsid ... /index.htm

Total Route Distance: 85 miles.

Total Drive Time: 2hrs, 25 minutes.

Total Route Completion: 3 hours, including rests.

I thought Saturdays were the best day for most people. Would Sunday the 10th be better? Saturday the 16th?

The 16th would be better for me, but don't change things just on my account. We'll never be able to get everyone to show up.

Research for the drive:

Pretty desolate and dusty.

Anyone else prefer the 9th or 16th?

ummm... My wife reminded me, in a not too subtle tone, that the 16th is the day my nephew is getting married.

Looks like I WON'T be putting on my sombrero after all... :(

GB,

Yes indeed that is a choice.

I'll weigh it against the consternation on my wife's face and the rest of the whole fam damily.

Can you say FRUSTRATED?

I just remember my mom saying, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." So, on that note, I am pleased to report my '96 CS smashed through the 230,000 mile barrier this past Friday near Tampa!

Dang, will be missing this one. Have EDBD 18 in Orlando  then straight up to Chipley, FL for a dirtbike race Sunday. Looks like a great ride planned! If that road is as desolate, flat, and straight as the pics show, Id imagine there will be limits of speed which are exceeded by a few ticks...

I'm looking forward to this despite the fact that it coincides with record high gas prices.

How many people are coming? Is it just going to be me and Glenn?

Postby GB24Hours » Tue Apr 19, 2011 1:08 pm

We had just about perfect weather for the drive... the only complaint was that maybe it was a little TOO nice... instead of windows-down and the wind in your hair, it was windows-up and turn on the air!

The participants met as-planned in the parking lot... but had to dodge anout a dozen Pontiac Solstices and Saturn Skys (Solsti? Skies?), as another car club had the bright idea to meet at the exact same spot at the exact same time. What are the odds of that?? But anyway, I'm not sure we'll ever meet at that stop again... the place was a madhouse. You would have thought they were giving away free food and gas.

So the drive went off without any problems. The first stop was at the Old Brick Rd., or part of the original Dixie Highway. Extremely dusty conditions saw us only driving on it for about 500 feet... we wanted to keep the rides looking nice.

We then drove through some forestry on Old King's Road, over the canals of Palm Coast, past Flagler Beach on a busy Saturday, and down A1A (just like our club logo) to the interesting and historic Ormond Loop. I intended to video our drive through part of the loop, but I forgot. I'll re-create it someday soon and post a video. By this time the young-uns in our group were desperate for a potty break, so it was a perfect time for our stop at James Ormond Park.

Bladders were emptied, monkey bars were climbed, legs were stretched, and we read the headstone at the tomb of an honest man. Then it was on through the last part of the trip, headed towards everyones favorite part of the day... lunch! Completing the Loop, we slowly made our way along the Halifax River and on into the nicely renovated "downtown" Daytona Beach. Crossing the river next to quaint Jackie Robinson Ballpark, we made our way back to A1A, and headed south down to Lighthouse Point Park. The cars were parked under the natural shade of twisted Live Oak trees, and the group sat outside for lunch overlooking Ponce Inlet.

After lunch the group decided to enjoy the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Museum... a beautifully restored and maintained piece of Florida history... at a very reasonable price. It was a tad breezey at the top, but the view is well worth the 203 stair climb.

All in all it was a wonderfully sucessful event, with good friendship, beautiful sights, and awesome vehicles.

Car culture in the USA. Bringing joy to people since 1903!
