My Latest Acquisition!

My Latest Acquisition!

Postby Senor Don » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:05 pm

Señor Don has done it again. Yes, I admit to being taunted by an ad on SAAB.net for a fine vintage '98 9000, scarabe green, 177k miles, 3rd owner with a maintenance history. I was also attracted by the $1200 asking price! Great car. The owner said a bidder had failed to come through and the car was being relisted. I confirmed my desire to purchase the vehicle and was assured I could be picked up from Logan in Boston. I later learned I was one of six receiving this info. Fortunately for me, my bidding competitor couldn't come up with the purchase amount. I made my flight reservation and zoomed to BOS the next morning @ 4:45 am. I was greeted and transported to Andover in a TOYOTA. Quite different than the 3 9000's the owner previously had. On the way we yacked about the defects, right side damage inflicted by his daughter, SRS warning light on, ABS light on, probably an intermittent failure of the right rear wheel sensor, a leaking windshield seal from a recent replacement, and low tire pressure due to sitting for two months. We arrived and the car was beautiful. Yes the front license placard was rusty and the rear plate mounting was missing tag bolts but it had a roof rack, spare 97 wheel, and four extra M+S tires to go with the snows already on 98MY wheels. Minutes after completing the sale the PO scrounged up two tag bolts and presented a hand drawn map to I-95 South. I drove off with a mile wide grin heading to the local HESS fuel emporium. Geez, premium was $0.25 cheaper than in FL, plus free air for the tires!!!!

The weather was bitter cold and I was happy I wore my LLBEAN winter coat. It was raining and the temp hovered just above freezing. I stopped at Wallyworld for some Arizona diet peach green tea before heading out. The interstate had moderate to heavy traffic and the turbo seemed not quite as responsive as my FPT CS. Yet, the shifts were remarkably smooth and the wheels well balanced. I set the speed warning @ 82 noting my phone GPS indicated the speedometer over-reported by 4 MPH. I drove 12 hours straight before settling down to a short winter's snooze at the NC Welcme Center. 4 hours later I was on the road again. Damn I love these cars! Fantastic passing response and handling! Really nice listening to Bluesville on Sirius radio. But 20 miles outside Savannah not so nice to hear a ticking, turned clacking from the engine bay. I pulled into a quick and dirty to check the oil level only to find it full and relatively clean. Restarting the engine, the valve clatter continued. As I nursed it southward back on 95, I slowed to 65 MPH and quicklly looked up Ted's shop in JAX. Maybe he could tell me an intake valve spring keeper caused a valve to drop and contact a piston. But no way this would stay together for another two hours. Then it dawned on me, i could pull into J. C. Lewis Ford and have my old SAAB service manager Rob Robinson do the same thing! Clattering and donking I parked in a space near his office and got out. I walked to the Service Department and asked for Rob. It was the I learned he had passed away six years ago. My heart sank. I decided to say hello to the dealer principal, who I had known through SAAB. His secretary informed me he had taken the afternoon off. DAYUM!!! Tome for plan B. I pulled out my IPAD and within minutes got 24 quotes to transport my ailing SAAB to Naples. I selected a carrier and began notifying the others I had selected another. Next, I found a Hertz office 2 blocks from the dealer. $200 later I was driving a Chevy southward.

Anyway, the SAAB got picked up Friday morning, arrived in Miami Saturday, sat all day there Sunday and finally arrived in Naples @ 2:30 this Monday afternoon. Oh yeah, just as my house air conditioner service guy handed me a bill for $359 letting me know the 2 ton, 10YO unit was hemorrhaging r22. Send me a quote, meanwhile I have to get a replacement head out of storage.

9000 CSE, let me count the ways... Yeah! RIGHT!

(Stay tuned for further developments.)

Great story! All the noise from the top end? Am interested to see what it ends up being once torn down. Post up some pics.

Went and looked at the TSN ad, amazed to see how few cars are listed in the classifieds section currently. Only three 9k ads total? Wow.

Don's write-ups are always emotional roller coasters. Exciting, utterly depressing, yet full of hope and promise.

A tow truck arrived Friday morning and hauled off my 97 9000cs before I could pull the rear ABS sensor for you :(
But atleast you got a door and Saab floormats for the 98.
While I sold it to an outfit called Jalopy Jay's  the flatbed driver said he was taking it to the LKQ in Daytona.
So I waited a couple days and went up there today to see if she was in the yard.
Not all that surprised to not find her, but truly surprised to find a Scarab Green 96 9000 Aero.
Looked like it was mostly there, but someone had pulled the ECU, DIC and injectors.
Can go back and pull an ABS sensor for you if need be.

Well sports fans, and other interested readers, I finally got to the bottom of the fiasco. Thursday, I yanked out the power train unit. I pulled the cams and noted all the vremainders closed. So much for the lost keeper theory. Friday, I drove across Alligator Alley to Miami to have the head evaluated I was hoping to have the liifters checked out have the head magna-fluxed and machined as necessary. Unfortunately, the machine shop was shuttered. Looked like it had been closed for several years. Crapola! Oh well... Back tom the drawing board.

Today, Monday, I separated the tranny from the block and dropped the oil pan. Lots of glittering copper in the bottom of the pan. Uh-oh!!!! I was severally disappointed to subsequently discover excessive play in connecting rod #1. CRAP!!! Spun bearing. Tomorrow I'll check out the other engine I have in the storage locker, plastigaging the rod bearing journals.

The saga continues. Stay tuned.

Okay! I really felt stupid misdiagnosing the rod knock as a collapsed valve spring. Especially after viewing the copper in the bottom of the oil pan. Even greater disappointment to find a similar failure on connecting rod #2 on the storage shed engine. Fortunately, Nick still had an engine from his "look what I found" hulk. MUCH better, he was willing to sell it to me! Yeah buddy! I loaded the engine hoist into my beater pickup and headed up to New Smyrna. Once I arrived it was a matter of minutes to position the motor in the truck bed. Anyway, the motor cleaned up well and after the longest struggle I've ever had reattaching an automatic tranny, I managed to refit the PowerTrain. Hopefully tomorrow the transplant will be completed. Then on to fluid flushes and replacing the right rear door. I really can't wait to drive it again.

Happy trails!

Thanks for compliment "Dude"!

Ya know, I'm beginning to think this car must be cursed. I went to hook up the cylinder head coolant temp sensor and discovered the the hole was smaller than the sensor and fine threaded. HUNH? A quick check of my three other heads showed THIS one was unique. Guess I will drill and tap it to match the others.

Still have to replace the right rear door and mend the front apron before the dang thing can be detailed. Sheesh, SAAB madness has gotten me.

I pulled the coolant temp sensor for the T5 conversion. If you can hold off till monday, I will see if the one I have threads into the b202 motor. If not, I will mail it to you. Let me know via text or email if you see this in time.

Nick,

Thank you. I really appreciate the most generous offer, but I think I am going to use the sensor that came with the car. I have a 13/32" drill and a 12-1.50 tap. Gonna test the tap in another head to confirm the size first. That way I can ensure it will be all conforming, plus I can finally get this thing back together. WHEE!!!!!

So I was hoping for an update on this project Don and I see you have already purchased another challenge. The FORCE is strong in this one. :ugeek:
Send some motivation our way and if things go as planned, stay tuned for another "I did something dumb" thread from yours truly.

Allllllllllrighty then! The 1998 Scarabe Green CSE is almost complete. I am merely awaiting a second front rotor to remedy front brake pulsation. I have ordered Balo rotors on three occasions, single units, and succeeded one time. The other two sent me apologies and refunds. I like fleabay. Anyhow, the car is far better now that I have fitted it with the right rear door and engine from the 88SPG parts supply emporium. BTW, does anyone know where I can get a SAAB center cap for a 1998 CSE????? I think I might hang onto this one despite the left windshield pillar and right rear dogleg rust.

Happy SAABing!
