Quieting creaks and squeaks in 9-3SS.

Postby metrognome » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:49 pm

I know the creaky-squeaky interior on the 9-3SS is a sore spot with many owners. I don't have too much problem with it aside from the little faux-wood panel that surrounds the gear shifter. Those with manual trans may not have this part. Is anyone aware of a way to quiet this piece down? I get a constant little ticking noise from this part at highway speeds. I have noticed there's some give to it, especially near the ignition. When I push down on it, the noise goes away. So I am thinking maybe inserting some thin, cushiony material under the trim piece might stop this, but I wanted to see if anyone else had heard of a specific method or if they had addressed this issue themselves.

I guess the good thing is that this is the biggest nuisance this car is giving me after almost a year of trouble free ownership, so woo-hoo! :D

Yep, just simply pull that panel up and fit some thin rubber foam material beneath to tighten it up. The sunroof and door cards are also common rattle areas.
....or just crank up some good tunes!

My most common rattle is the plastic piece on the bottom of the rear view, the wood panel on the dash and my cup holder. Sometimes I use dimes, pennies or quarters in the dash. The noise quiets down and then returns... I will start using foam.

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. I do get some noise that seems to come from the sunroof area, but it's not that bad yet. Not like it was on the old 9-5 there toward the end.

No squeaks nor rattles in mine. A little buzzing in the doors when the Bose system is cranked up. Some Dynamat (someday) wil probably help that.

Other than that, the only thing I hear is my exhaust, the A/C blower, and my key ring sliding an inch from side-to-side on the center console. Wish I could take the key out of the ignition whenever I want like I can with the SPG!

I do get a little bass buzz on the doors and wanted to do Dynamat, but I don't listen to music loud enough for that to be a problem most of the time. Maybe I'll save it for when a window regulator goes bad.

I solved the key noise problem by keeping my Saab key on a separate ring from my other keys. All that it's attached to is the SAAB key chain we got at OP SAAB. Much nicer.

I finally got around to this fix due to the bad weather today. My ticks and squeaks have been getting worse, so I had finally had enough.

A while back I bought a couple sheets of Funky Foam at a craft store. This is a high-dollar investment at 89 cents per sheet. You can get it with or without adhesive on the back. Naturally, the adhesive version is perfect for this application. I cut it up and applied to the bottom of the gear shift surround. When I put the trim piece back in place and pushed on it, it seemed more solid and stable, but it still squeaked a bit. So I pulled out the big gun, which was something I should have tried ages ago: lithium grease. I applied small amounts of grease to the various tabs and slots on the console and on the trim piece. I snapped it back in and pushed on it. It still gives in places, especially at the pointy part behind the ignition switch, but there are no squeaks! I haven't driven the car yet, but I think this is the fix, and it's so easy to do.
