A/T Shifter Cable

Postby TheDude » Thu Jul 05, 2012 7:20 pm

So my A/T shifter ball has been broke for some time. The shifter has a really loose feeling. No easy fix from what I've read and seeing that the part is uber expensive I was thinking of sourcing one from a junk yard. Now, I live in St. Augustine and know there are some in Jax and Daytona area, but I'm not sure where I should go. I would be more willing to drive South than North. Any thoughts on a good Saab yard?

Also, any special tools I need? I have a 200pc craftsman and tool box for the rest. I was thinking it would take about 2-3 hours to get it out. Have to do some more research.

*Replaced transmission mount and passenger side mount last weekend.

Last I spoke with Ted, he had a way to repair the joint in the cables. Replaced one on a clients '02 9-3 last week with a new cable (only one new left on the shelf). Have a few ideas how to repair by looking at the old joint. Maybe he can chime in and post a pic of the rebuilt joint. They are just north of you in Jacksonville. As often as I see the shift cable fail, I wouldn't time if you find a good used one. I have had them come apart just by gently moving them to the side to change the NSS before. If you do go used, the 99-01 9-5 cables are interchangeable (only 1" or so longer overall).

The yard in Daytona is LKQ just west of 95 on 92. Probably only a couple dollar part, just your time and sweat removing it. Lately there have been some 9-3s there. Good luck

These must be the pictures Ted was referring to. See below.
The threaded part is from a classic 900 ignition switch housing with the hole drilled larger and the thread insert pressed in. Then a bolt and washer installed that will allow the cable to swivel and lock-tite'd in

That's perrty smart...I will have to bring it by soon. I'm side tracked with a P1181 issue and have to change out the brake booster.
