Hey Ted, HELP ME FIND A CHEAP TRACK CAR

Postby GB24Hours » Thu Aug 09, 2012 2:50 pm

What things should I check on a 1988 924S that the owner says has a 'no spark, no start' condition? Take the rotor cap off and make sure it spins, first, I guess (timing belt not snapped). Then what?

If the car is generally in good shape, it should be worth $1000 as is, right?

Are you Ted?

No... I'm heading in several directions at once.

Gotta get rid of the '02.

I love driving the Aero at track days, but really, if I'm gonna keep it for any length of time, I should quit hammering it.

You have a $600 track day car... maybe I should try for a $1000 track day car.

I was just saying that because the listing is in my home town.
Ever consider turning the 2002 9-3 into a track car?

Crank sensors.
There are two sensor and the cables will be rotted.
Some of these sensors will be frozen in and not fun to get out
also some have adjustable air gaps if you have to remove the mounting bracket to install.
So be careful !!!!
Part number is 94460611500 Porsche
0261210003 Bosch
List about 206.62 each and i think a good price would be 125.00 or less
These cars can be nightmares
Think 944 is a better car
These are only really bad dreams

Well I was leaning towards this '88 because it at least has the 944 motor in it (160hp, supposedly fewer problems). And they say the 924 is better balanced front to rear.

So I just came from looking at it... what a colossal piece of crap.

IT'S PERFECT! ;)

Hasn't been registered since 2010. Interior is torn to shreds. Passenger side footwell is full of water and moldy. Windshield is cracked. And the clutch pedal is suspiciously close to the floor. It's at a small car lot, and the actual owner wasn't around to get more info from, so I don't know what he's tried on it to get it running.

Aside from some 'sideswipe' damage on the driver's side, the body is actually in pretty decent shape. The underside and the suspension seem to be in decent shape, too. I saw no rust, ecxept some surface rust where the paint is gone at the scrape/dent.

He wants $1500. Without more info, I'd give him $500 as-is. I'm sure he won't take it, though.

Looks like a good 500 dollar headache
This is the best for the 924's
I was made from left over parts that Porsche had after stopping the production of that model
The engine is not VW ! Good thing !
And balance is much better but still a 924
In my opinion there are far cheaper cars out there for racing purposes
I can see that car needing about 2 grand for parts to be good and dependable on the track
Including tires
What kind of budget are you looking at
What do you need
A car to drive to the track or a trailer queen?

Sometimes I hate the voice of reason. :D

I don't have a set budget, but I'm just looking for something fairly inexpensive that I can put some performance tires on, and HAVE FUN at pdx's. (without hammering my daily driver) I'm not looking for a RACE car... I can't afford it. I don't have to be as fast as a GT-R, but I do want it to drive there, run hot laps, and drive home.

GB,

That definitely looks like a project. It's also difficult when a vehicle isn't running. I do like how it says 'Porsche' on the cam cover.

Did you try to start it up? Any signs of life?

so your wishful thinking and checking out some options
Good
but please do not impulse buy the first one
1500 maybe 500 plus repairs of an unknown amount
Not a great idea
Love the car can't live with out.
ok.
I'm sure the car will be there later so check around and see whats out there
A Honda crx is fun and low cost

No, the guy with the keys wasn't around. And you guys are right... it just has too much in the 'negative' column, and not enough on the '+' side.

But this is the reason I post this stuff here, so you guys can point out the downsides for me. Trying hard not to impulse buy.

Of course my BEST option would be to just give in and get a Miata. But that would make too much sense.

Might go look at an N/A '87 300ZX 5sp 3.0l.

Yup, I know.

The guy with the Z is desperate to sell 'cuz, he's buying a Miata. He's gone from $1200 to $750. A/C is broken (not an issue), and it has mismatched tires (not an issue) but he says it runs well, and doesn't leak any fluids. Trying to work out when I can drive out the 30mins one way to see it and drive it.

I'm going to try to take a look at this car on Monday or Tuesday (8th or 9th).

If only I knew someone in Jax who worked at a shop where he could replace all the fluids and put a new battery in it for me.
