First time changing the alternator. I hope its not as bad as I've read. Stripped it down last night and going to finish up this weekend.

I admire your willingness to tackle these projects. I am not as brave as you, but I am working up the courage to do my own serpentine belt and tensioner for the dreaded 60,000 mile service. If you want to help/supervise/observe/hang out when I do it, let me know.

It can be frustrating at times, but I enjoy the work.

...just finished. Took about 4.5 hours start to finish. Previous alternator lasted 5 years and 100k miles. Hopefully I won't have to do it again anytime soon.

On a B205 9-3? Yes, out the top is by far the best method. Did you previously use a Bosch brand alternator? 5 years and 100k seems far too short. If so, check your vehicle battery positive and ground cables for degradation. Can note this on with a volt meter on vehicle battery when the radiator fans cycle and there is a large drop in system voltage. Only use Bosch rebuilt for Saab.

It was a B235R. 2001 95.

We bought the car in 2008 with 70k miles. Within a month of purchase we had to replace the alternator. So the first one lasted 7 years and 70k miles and the second 5 years and 100k miles. Both replacements are/were reman'd Bosch. I will check out the voltage though. I did have some problems with corrosion on the battery cables about a year ago. I cleaned everything really well and it hasn't showed up again. Maybe I need to replace the cables?

Ahh yes same out the top suggestion for a B235R as well. Would suggest using (too late now) the later 140amp Bosch unit fitted to 02+ models. Rarely see failures on those compared to the 130amp in the 9-3/5 models. Bolts right in. I even install the 140 in NG900s which used a 90amp unit from the factory. Take your battery meter and check the resistance across the B+ cable at the battery and alternator lug. Over time, the alternator melts the cable where it bolts to the alternator causing a high resistance burning out the alternator sooner. Corrosion within the batter cable at the battery (caused usually by a crack in the battery case at the terminal; replace battery) can also give you a high resistance on the circuit making the alternator work over time to try and keep up with the vehicles electronics demand. FWIW, the B+ cable from a OG9-3 will fit '99-'01 2.3L 9-5s just fine, its cheaper than the 9-5 cable, I keep one on the shelf along with a 140amp Bosch alt.
