ATF Fluid

Postby metrognome » Thu Jun 27, 2013 2:54 pm

So after a quick scan of the interwebs, it seems I have three options for automatic transmission fluid. I can buy SAAB automatic transmission fluid from eEuroparts, I can go a Toyota dealer and get Toyota's T-IV fluid (widely recommended on 9-5s, not quite sure about the 9-3), or I can buy Mobil 3309 at an auto parts store at what I'd imagine will be half the price. Can anyone confirm that the Mobil is indeed safe to use on my 9-3?

Yup, Mobil 3309 or Toyota Type 4 for the 5-spd auto is fine. Usually the Yota stuff is easier to find and also a little cheaper. Usually takes 12qts to flush through to clean out the trans well.

Yikes! 12 quarts? What's the actual capacity? I would think it's a lot less than that. Is there anything wrong with just draining and refilling ... and maybe doing it a little more often?

Measure the fluid capacity when you drain the trans, refill with the same amount then drive it for a couple miles. Its usually around 3.5-4.5liters. Repeat the drain and refill procedure until the fluid is the same color as the new going in. If no drain and fill procedure has been done in 60k miles, usually 4 drains and refills is what it takes which is around 12 qts. The Yota fluid is $5qt so $60 in fluid which is cheap compared to Saab branded at ~$20/qt which is $240. Both of which are cheaper than a replacement transmission of course.

Have given the death certificate for three 9-5s this month for 5-spd automatic transmission faults from poor servicing, along with a '01 9-3 today. Cheap cars, poor or non existent service routines, along with expensive parts and labor ops are driving these things into the grave quickly.

There is no alternative AW1 fluid for the 6 speed auto trans in the v6 aero and '10+ 9-3 autos. You're stuck with $20/liter for those.

I purchased a case of The Toyota fluid on Friday evening. They're $6 a quart, so it came to about $77 in the end. I haven't attempted the flush yet, but will try to get to that in the next few days. Let's hope I don't screw it up.

Good stuff! You can always return what is unused but every trans at 60k ive done usually takes 3-4 cycles to get it nice and clean for the next 60k. Usually drive 5-10 miles between each drain and refill. Be sure to check the trans fluid level once complete using the green dipstick, while the engine is running in Park after cycling through D and R a couple times.

ATF flush & fill successful this weekend! Look for my tutorial soon. The ones I found online were badly translated from the original Swedish and/or made no mention of tools needed. When you have to make three trips to the auto parts store to get the right stuff, it gets a little frustrating.
