Now is the season of my discontent.

Postby GB24Hours » Tue May 29, 2012 5:54 pm

One by one, what I call "secondary" systems continue to fail on the '07 Aero. This is causing frustration and disillisionment for me.

Though I will probably ALWAYS have the SPG in the garage, talk me out of changing to another make for my daily driver.

Ok so what's failing? and let's see if it's worth talking you out of it.

I can tell you I am on my last newer SAAB myself....

All interior "dome" lights inoperative. (Main interior ceiling lights, map lights, cosmetic lights in the visor mirrors, footwell lights.) Fuse #12 blows with a loud POP as soon as it makes contact. (Courtesy lights in the bottom of the doors that light your step when the door is open DO work.)

"Secondary" instrument panel lights inoperative. (Guages, audio system, and climate control lights work, all others do not, ie: headlamp switch backlighting, 'night panel' button, etc.)

Steering wheel lock inoperative. (*click* *click* *click*.... not locked.)

Memory sideview mirrors reset to full "in and down" position all on their own once or twice per week. Have to manually reset them.

Rain-sensing wipers inoperative.

Air conditioning decides with no rhyme or reason to sometimes work, and sometimes not, no matter if it is in 'automatic' or manual mode.

Driver's side rear window motor sounds and moves like it is full of rocks. I refuse to put that window down any more.

These have been failing one at a time at a frequency or about one per month. Can't wait to see what's next!

***After a very brief look at the first 3 or so problems on the list, Justin suggested it could be a failing Body Control Module. I found one online out of a wrecked '07, and installed it. It made NO difference whatsoever. He has VERY KINDLY offered to keep it for the week that we are on vacation in June and fiddle with it, but dropping a car off 90 miles away from home is problematic. ***

Wow! Sorry to hear about all that, Glenn. I don't know what to tell you, as my car has been almost perfect in the year and a half I have owned it. I do think there's something funky with my anti-lock brakes, but I'm not really sure, and they seem to work properly. I hope you can get it sorted without too much trouble or expense.

While we're off the Saab topic, saw one of these pass me on the freeway. Didn't know they made a diesel in the US. Has two turbo chargers, one smaller one to spool quickly and second larger one for later. 265 hp, 425 pd/ft of torque and 580 mile range. 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. Too bad you have to buy in in Auto only, has special electronics to control the torque of the engine. Only $30k at our local World Imports...

Wow, that is quite a list. If it were me, I would prioritize the list. First would probably be AC. Then rear window. I almost never open the rear windows in the 9000, but having the door panels off the 900s a bunch of times I would think it to be an easy fix and something to build your confidence moving forward.
Rain-Sensing wipers is one of the dumbest features ever invented...am I too stupid to realize it's raining?
As for interior lights, I'm not sure mine work. I prefer to know my cars well enough that I could handle the controls blindfolded.
Steering wheel lock...what is the really for anyway? If someone wants to steal my car that badly, that feature isn't going to stop them.

I have heard stories of how Audi's are harder to work on when it comes to interior issues like these.
Did you really show a pic of a Pontiac? You can't get enough of GM's brand-crushing? How about a Saturn

Maybe it is time to gut the interior and make a street-legal race car out of it
Just kidding, I wouldn't give up hope. I hope it is something simple like a ground/fuse/relay issue.

They make me put them down in PDX's.

88SPG wrote:Rain-Sensing wipers is one of the dumbest features ever invented...am I too stupid to realize it's raining?

When they work, they're fantastic. Completely replaces the "Intermittent" setting. They only swipe when it's needed. It keeps you from fiddling with them.

88SPG wrote:interior lights, I'm not sure mine work. I prefer to know my cars well enough that I could handle the controls blindfolded.

I don't need interior lights for the controls. But it would be nice to be able to read something if I needed to, or for KJ to be able to find something in her bag if she wanted. After all, this IS a car with a $40,000 sticker price we're talking about here. I shouldn't have to carry a flashlight if my wife wants a piece of gum after dinner.

88SPG wrote:Steering wheel lock...what is the really for anyway?

That doesn't mean it shouldn't work.

I'll take a RWD Holden Commodore with a 556HP Corvette V8 in it. Sounds like fun.

So I would also look at this in priority....

A/C first...... have you checked to see if you have any lose grounds on the fuse box? or in the under hood box? This really sounds like a ground issues that has gotten lose. My 9-5 would stop running due to a bad ground when I first got it. I am looking for the schematic for you and will send it over if I find it.

Do you have a copy of the WIS? if not let me know and I will send you a link to download it from.

For the rear window you probably have a bad regulator or the rollers on the arm are shot... should be an easy fix to pull the panel and see whats going on in there.

If you do decide to leave the brand do lots of test driving! The S4 aint what it used to be and the G8 well....nice motor but still a GM turd! IMHO.. :)

Give me this, but with a 3.0 liter turbocharged or supercharged V6 making 325hp, and I'll buy it tomorrow.

You can get it turbocharged. Makes more power than my Saab 9-5 does

And for about half the price, but ... it's a Kia. I won't deny, though, they look like pretty nice cars.

That Kia Optima is one of the best looking small sedans on the road today.

But it doesn't come how I'd want one.

Nah.

I keep going back to the S4.

Next year I might be able to find a nice 2010 model. Supercharged V6 that makes 333hp. For $1200, I can get an ECU tune and a different pulley and belt for the supercharger and have a 400hp S4.

I just have to be patient, and stalk my prey. I'm pretty good at it.

The s4 is nice. I just like the b4 model s4's with the twin turbo v6.

Hey Ted...

What motor do you suppose might shoehorn into the back of this?

Like I need a "project".

Could be fun, though.

Maybe I could hire Nick to assemble the rest for me.

Those are some interesting looking door seam lines. Plus the rear hatch is tiny. I'd like to see a Saab engine in it though :)

The Aero is staying... for now.

But I'm saving some pennies for an XF Supercharged or an S4 in the not-too-far-away future.
