Greetings to NEFLSaab Club

Postby saabniner » Wed May 25, 2011 12:12 pm

My wife & I are Florida crackers but just recently relocated to NE Fla after our retirement. Bought first Saab 1975 - 99LE - have been hooked ever since. Just acquired a '08 9-5 Aero Sportcombi (Saab #9) with 61K on odo, now have to get rid of my all-time favorite Saab, '97 9000 Aero-manual tranny- with 157K mi. Won't bore you with the old/new comparison on this post, but will miss my 9kt. Have used Saabnet.com for 10+ years, still use it, great resource of DIY's info. Look forward to future dialog with members and perhaps meeting some of you in the future. Wish best of luck to NEFLSC...John

Hi John. Actually, I'd love it if you'd bore us with the comparison of the 9-5 and 9000. Either way, welcome to a true hard core SAABist!

'97 9KT Aero / '08 9-5 Aero Sportcombi Comparison

Postby saabniner » Thu May 26, 2011 8:54 am

In the suspension & handling area, no contest, the Abbott suspension mod on the 9KT is amazing, stiff but turns on a rope, while the Sportcombi is certainly respectable, firmer ride than a non-Aero. Power-wise, you can definitely tell the higher horsepower the SC has (260 vs 225), but with both having the same torque (258 lbs/ft), I think 0-60 time would be almost identical. however, my wife states emphatically the 9KT is faster. My guess is going from a manual 5-speed to an auto is the difference, although I'm impressed with the "Sport" mode of the Sentronic, even more so the paddles. Amazingly, we both noticed that the SC "seems" to be smaller inside than the 5 door hatchback of the 9KT (I always loved the size of the trunk-can hold four sets of golf clubs, furniture, etc.). And yes, you can notice the "GMness" of the newer vehicle, but the 2.3 Turbo is in my opinion bullet-proof, very durable. Overall, I like the newer SC but will really miss my old Aero. I just don't have room for three cars.

Almost exactly my thoughts regarding the generational differences. (I've never had a 2.3) I'm positive my 9-3 Aero is the quickest of the 3 I have right now, but the cars get more and more "visceral" as you travel back in time, and feel faster.
