Hooked.

I guess I might feel obligated to the Gods of Fate for not attending last weeks' SAAB Gathering. Yes, once again, time to share another "SAAB-story".

I had picked up a friend dropping off his Mustang for a $750 leaking headgasket repair when about a mile later, my engine died. The radio, blower, and lights remained merrily functioning until interrupted by a few futile twists of the key, (in neutral). It cranked, but wouldn't restart. l switched them off and sans power steering made a right at the intersection . I coasted to a stop in a long turn lane, popped the hatch, and lifted the spare tire cover. Only then did I realize my emergency spare ignition cassette and fuel pump were thankfully right there. Unfortunately, my hand tools were not. I had left them at the house. Thankfully, Siri found me a towing service less than seven tenths of a mile away. A twenty to twenty-five minute promise time turned out to be fifteen. I exposed the right front tow hook for the truck driver's winch. Moments later he asked why my car was smoking. I opened the hood and immediately disconnected the battery my nostrils filling with the stench of burning epoxy inside the DIC. Once back home, $105 dollars lighter, I removed and replaced four Torx screws, the Direct Ignition Cassette, and its electrical connector. No more extended cranking!
(Note to self: Place tools in the boot!)

Once again, I am Happily SAABing!

What was the version of your smoked IDM? 3.4B? What was the build date code? Can find this info on the SEM sticker. Those were the known ones for catching fire and dying on the road, Saab had a huge recall 8 years ago and changed them on the 9-3 9-5 both I4 and v6 models. Very dangerous to continue to use those, for your experienced reason. There is also a SPS software update for the ECM to extend the life of the new IDM. Latest software for T7 came out in 2008, well worth the $75 to update the module.

When buying a replacement, be sure to use an OEM SEM unit of 3.7C or later. Think 3.7E is latest from SEM. Stay far, far far away from the cheap Chinese knockoffs. Easy to identify, half the cost or less and no SEM Made in Sweden sticker. Throw a set of new NGK plugs in there at the same time for good measure.

Ha, wow 3.2 was the original release version. Recommend not using any of them, even as a spare. Throw em all away and buy a new OE SEM and get your ECM software updated. Haven't seen a 3.7D go bad in the four plus years those have been around. The later versions will throw CELs before failure.
