9-5 Crank, No-start Concern. HELP!!!!!

My 2002, 9-5 Linear 2.3L with 188k mi., intermittently starts and idles. The MIL is not illuminated and there are no stored codes. The engine has an occasional miss but otherwise operates as designed at idle or minimal throttle. Full acceleration pushes the boost needle up to the red mark. The engine initially bogs down under full throttle then dies when the throttle is lifted. It will not restart until it has cooled. Today, I swapped the black ignition cassette (with dielectric grease in the tips), as well as the Crank Position Sensor with known good parts. The original CPS read 1580 ohms while its replacement read 956 ohms. Neither one moved the tach during cranking. Despite these replacements, the engine continued to crank, but wouldn't start. I disconnected the three pressure sensors individually, read their P codes, cleared the codes, then reconnected the sensors. When the engine was running I properly repositioned the throttle body cable clip. The main relay 229 was shorted across terminals 30, 87A, and 87 and was replaced. The fuel relay 102, start relay 21, and ignition relay 517 all operate as designed. Each has power on terminals 30 and 86. The legs of the Maxi fuses are clean and have been verified in-situ. The dash fuses all test fine. Fuel pressure measured 38 psi cranking and 40 psi running. Previously, I verified the resistance of the throttle body cross circuits.

Mechanically, the valve timing is correct and there is a quarter tank of 93 octane fuel. I think the failure is ignition related but do not understand what I have overlooked. HELP!!!

Don,

I haven't ventured as far into the ignition system beyond what you have mentioned. I feel you are on the right track, especially if it is cranking and you have fuel pressure. Your symptoms are very similar to a bad CPS, but you tested that already. Only thing I can offer is to check and see if the CPS is seated properly? I know sometimes the o-ring will get stuck when removing the old part. I would also say test for spark at the plugs, but there really isn't a great way to accomplish the task. I'm sure you will figure it out. I just wanted to add some comments :)

Man, oh man do I ever want to hide my sheepish grin. Of course, you were spot on with the Crank Position Sensor not being properly tightened! I found the torx bolt was loose enough it could be tightened by hand and the CPS could be pressed in more deeply. The ever so slight increase in air gap may have been the cause all along as the tach needle now rises when cranking. But the real benefit is the engine now starts more regularly! HOORAY!

Yee haa. Another victory for Senor Don!

I must have spent 1/2 a day trying to achieve the proper air gap for the CPS on the trigger wheel with a fabricated bracket on the T5 conversion.

Sadly not! The damned MAIN RELAY 229 buzzes in a rapid Morse Code with the key in the run position when trying to restart the engine hot. I am about at my wits end. BUT, Keep calm and SAAB on.

Dude, Glen & Nick,

YES!!! I have tasted Victory at last! A certain "crazy SAABer" who hails from Melbourne suggested I look at the manifold ground and EUREKA! I recognized my failure to properly tighten the G7 bolt when I installed the engine! A few spins of my ratchet's 10mm socket and PRESTO CHANGO. Starts First Time Everytime!

Isn't it amazing how another set of eyes looking at the same problem can bring about it's solution? Justin, I'm not worthy!
But I have a beeeeg smile on my face now.

After an engine R&R if that's the only mouse you have to chase down, you did well! I suggested that from experience of course. I once missed to reattach the ground lead after a thermostat job. It started but ran really funky. Reviewed things and it purred once reattached. Glad to hear it was a simple no $$ fix.
